Edo SUBEB workers protest unpaid salary arrears
Workers of the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board have staged a protest over the non-payment of their salary arrears spanning three months by the state government.
The protesters, who were mainly staff of the state headquarters of the agency, marched through major streets of Benin on Tuesday with placards.
The aggrieved workers lamented that the delay in the payment of their salaries, leave, transport grant and incremental credit had caused them economic hardship as they could no longer meet up with their financial obligations.
The spokesman for the protesters, Daniel Odion, urged the state government to order the immediate release of the report of the committee it set up to ascertain the true status of the agency’s personnel at the state and local government levels.
Odion said though, the committee had since concluded its assignment, its reports had yet to be assented by the governor, a situation which he said had made it impossible for the state government to pay them their entitlements.
Another protester from Oredo Local Government Area, Caroline Akorogie, said publication of the report was long overdue as its delay had contributed to the financial challenges faced by the affected staff.
